House, Abbeyleix
Take a guided tour of Heritage House and step back in time to a
fascinating tale of Laois history. From the first settlers through
the dynasties and power struggles of medieval times, relive the
tales of the 12th Century Cistercian monastery which gave its name
and hear about the establishment of a planned estate town.
Other themes recalled by the exhibits ranged from the local
experience of the famine and land agitation to the development of
transport, religious and educational institutions as well as
industries which include a factory which made carpets for the
'Titanic'.
You may also visit the Sexton's House, located beside the Church
of Ireland Parish centre, this 1800's time period residence was
restored by Abbeyleix Company to its former glory in 1997. Visits
may be arranged through the Heritage House.
